J. FLUX WORDS

The J Flux words project started as a quiet way to express my thoughts and emotions on Instagram in an unstructured free flow sort of way. I began originally under the pseudonym "Plum words" and went out of my way not to engage with the account so that the algorithm didn't accidentally send the content to friends.

I was still a bit nervous about expressing myself with words and decided to remain anonymous for the time being. I wanted to see how strangers would interact with the work online without the fear of judgement from people I knew.

To my surprise the words found a quick audience and people from around the world were resonating with my random thoughts. After about 6 months I came out as a poet and changed the account from Plum Words to J Flux words.

Earlier in my life it was not uncommon for me to write affirmations in bars, bus stops and buses with a sharpie, never signing them. But with the hope that maybe someone would find them when they needed them.

Now that I was writing regularly the idea returned to me but this time in the form of wheat paste and poster art. The major difference being I would sign the work this time with J Flux, and the paper would give me a chance to really flesh out my thoughts before putting them up.

The reason I chose to sign the work was to link the different pieces together. I liked the idea of a faceless poet encouraging you in a synchronistic way when you needed it most.

I currently live and work in Toronto, Canada. But I've been visiting Manhattan and Montreal as much as possible to continue to spread the project.

In 2022 I published a photo book on amazon of my work called "Let's go for a walk" that follows the first 6 months of the street art I put up in the streets. The book has sold copies in a number of cities around the world and even inspired an individual in Bangalore, India to rewrite some of the words and put them in the streets herself.

For me there's magic in the idea that people I will never know will find the words exactly when they need to hear them and that's what keeps me motivated to continue to express the work and put it in the streets.
